It took me a few listens to appreciate this song. I found I needed to do the same with Poodle Hat. I thought Poodle Hat was not one of his best albums, but over the last few years, it is now one of my favorites. Al’s music just grows on you. This song he released is certainly as good if not better than most of his other originals. I have always found his original songs to be hit or miss, this one is more a hit than a miss. Good job Al! Now the video on the other hand…..Yikes

Rhyme scheme? This is what we’re concerning ourselves with? The song does have a noticeable rhyme scheme, first of all, and second of all, this song is unprecedented because it brings about an issue that has rarely been touched on before by artists IN their music. “Weird Al” should not retire; he is taking a bold step in his career by opening his listeners’ eyes to important issues such as this WHILE entertaining. Remember that “Weird Al” is a satirist, it is his job to entertain with comedy AND mock social (e.g. certain issues) and cultural (e.g. music) trends. He styles the music of “We Are the World” to a tee AND (sarcastically) takes on a current issue from all angles, including file-sharing site users (telling them blatantly to not download free music), the RIAA (saying that by attacking individual users such as a “grandma” or a “seven-year-old girl” and treating them harshly, it’s not going to solve the problem), and the artists themselves (they do lose money, and even though it’s not a significant loss to them, we still shouldn’t do it).

Heh, I know. There were comments made by others that was on the verge of starting a flame war.

You should give the rest of the album a chance. listen to the 30-second previews on itunes or amazon or something, before completely giving up. I think Al chose to debut this song pretty much for the irony of it all. A song telling you NOT to download it, but in reality giving it to everybody for free. Plus it can be used as fuel for the anti-RIAA like-minded people.

And sure, the rhyming scheme is a little different, but then again, “We are the World” hardly rhymed at all.
